New Appliances vs Diamonds

Ho, Ho, Hold on Just a Minute… Maytag & Mistletoe?

New Appliances vs Diamonds – Aren’t Diamonds a Girl’s Best Friend?

Every year advertisers spend oodles of money on campaigns designed to New Appliances vs Diamondscapture consumers. Starting in November, as American Thanksgiving approaches, all the major networks start to carry commercials that resemble mini Hallmark Hall of Fame movies. They are romantic. The happily-ever-after is implied. A beautiful couple. Soft lighting. The man presents the perfect, size-2 woman in his life with a sparkling token of his love and adoration. Diamonds abound, and why shouldn’t they? Aren’t diamonds a girl’s best friend?

Well… not exactly.

Necklace & Matching Earrings – No Match for Matching Washer & Dryer

A recent poll was conducted among middle-class women in the US and Canada which discovered that jewelry isn’t actually the way to a woman’s heart – a new appliances seems to be a better way to go. The question posed was this: “Your husband/significant other is spending $20,000 on your Christmas present. You have 2 choices. a) new appliances or b) diamond necklace and earrings. Do you chose a) or b)? (No, you may not divide the money and choose both )”

93% of Women Polled Preferred New Appliances

It turns out that middle-class women in the US and Canada are a very practical bunch. new appliances vs diamonds(At least the particular sample polled on Facebook!) Of all the women that answered the question as posed, 93 percent responded that they would rather have the new appliances. The small percentage who put their own tweak on the poll responded with some version of them selling the jewelry to have the cash to do something practical with. (There was one woman who just got new appliances so she picked the diamonds. There is always that one person who skews the results!)

To be fair to the marketing firms, there was mention of the fact that some day, if practical needs were abundantly met, pretty jewelry might be nice. For now, new appliances are clearly where it is at.

Maytag & Mistletoe

I doubt that this little poll is going to create shock waves in the world of marketing, but it could make a big different in your personal relationships. At the risk of offending anyone, maybe we could break with tradition and think outside the box for a moment. Men, what might happen if you gave your significant other the gift of a convection oven/range/matching washer and dryer/upright freezer/chest freezer/dishwasher…? I can’t promise anything, but let’s just say that mistletoe might get more of a workout than you might have imagined!

Giving the Gift of an Appliance

Many large and small appliance retailers offer gift certificates and will cart away old appliances and install new ones. If you live on an acreage, check out the blog “Creative Appliance Recycling” to learn about ways to recycle your old appliances. If your appliance still has some good life in it, why not post it as “free” on Kijiji or your local buy and sell? Maybe you could really help someone else in need. And when it comes right down to it, isn’t that what this season is really supposed to be about in the first place?
